An AMC expeditionary force to planet Yelsain found itself in deep danger when the mothership of the expedition was forced to return to orbit under heavy fire.
The expeditionary forces where surveying planet Yelsain and at the same time where testing the capabilities of a new squad of Forest Rangers. Unexpectedly, when the mothership was carrying out replenishment tasks for the land forces, it found itself under heavy fire from several points. It was clear that it was a well coordinated attack.
Forest Ranger
The mothership started manoeuvring to gain altitude and increase the distance from the identified sources of fire while the ground troops started firing on their own.
Unfortunately a lucky shot disabled several stabilizers of the mothership and the commander was forced to ascend to orbit as there was a risk that the ship could become unmanageable within the atmosphere.
After the initial shock the ground forces were able to clear the perimeter and control the situation. News from the mothership were that it was impossible to return to the surface and therefore it was impossible for it to resupply the land forces. That meant that although the initial situation seemed to be under control the ground forces were effectively out of supply. The Rangers were not fully equipped as they were testing the systems and after the initial combat ordnance was running low. In fact, after an initial assessment, even basic supplies were found to be scarce.
It was decided to reinforce the perimeter and fire a distress beacon to mark the location while the mothership contacted AMC headquarters and organized a rescue mission.
A rescue force was quickly assembled and sent towards Yelsain. The main problem was that the hyperspace lane to be used was a lengthy one, so the ground troops needed to prepare themselves to repel any situation that could arise in the next few days. Details of the rescue plan were to be prepared while the hyper-jump was taking place.
The main advantage of the Forest Rangers, which is their mobility and speed was negated by the fact that they were going to be forced to remain stationary. As it was feared, attacks came several times during the following days and nights and the situation of the ground troops became increasingly uneasy. In addition, local creatures of several kinds where starting to probe the perimeter of the defences. This usually should not be a problem by itself but it increased the stress of the patrols as they were under a strict "conserve munition" order.
Finally the rescue force arrived on orbit of Yelsain and it was sent to the surface in two groups. Rescue Team One was tasked with locating and dealing with the sources of the enemy fire while Rescue Team Two was tasked with securing a landing zone for the BFF-1 Mechanized Assault-Force Carrier class ship that was going to accommodate the Forest Rangers and the ground troops.
The arrival of the rescue teams marked the end of the ongoing attack. Enemy troops were not willing or where not ready to confront a well-prepared mobile force so they tried to disperse, hide and cover from AMC's fresh troops.
Boarding of the stranded troops was quick and mostly uneventful. Fortunately casualties were low and were attended by the medical team on-board the BFF-1. Not a single Forest Ranger was lost although some of them were damaged, even heavily damaged, and their real combat status is waiting an assessment from the technical teams.
After this successful rescue mission an investigation has been open to try to clarify the three main questions that kept open once the preliminary reports reached AMC headquarters:
• The origin and intention of the enemy forces: where they local gangs trying to assert the ownership of their territory? or did they receive some kind of external support?
• The origin and intention of several unidentified elements that were spying on the battle ground: where they local scavengers getting ready to benefit from the outcome of the battle? or were they informers for some unidentified third party?
• Was it really a lucky shot that disabled the stabilizers of the Expeditionary Force's mothership or is there some kind of defect in the design that could endanger those ships in similar situations?
Currently both the rescue teams and the expeditionary force are travelling back to Comra and are expected to arrive in just a few days.
